It's not that easy to identify and write down unique selling propositions and clear service offerings for customers.
There are thousands of practice areas in the ITC world. Assembling the skillset required to deliver solutions means so many hours of learning and practising that a human life, or two for that matter, is insufficient for reaching a good enough level.
As a consequence, no single company can offer the whole spectrum of skills in a cost effective manner.
As a proof of that we assist to the crumble of a significant number of do-it-all companies on the market.
A significant number of other companies are taking the specialization road and, while being super quick and accurate in what they do (repetiton is mother of skill), they are not well positioned for delivering solutions.
Usually they concentrate on providing a product that others configure and integrate.
This makes us move to the point I am willing to make. To describe it, I would say that a customer has a problem to solve. This will translate into specific requirements to be met. The customer hence wants to find someone he trusts to lead the engineering & delivery effort for the solution.
When people want to build a house, they go to find an architect to create and develop their project. Someone they can trust. We can here note that the people wanting the house do not expect the architect to be able to build the house himself.
Rather, they expect him to give them recommendations on who to contact to carry the work. Usually the architect has a personal network in which he can tap for specific & specialized matters. Likewise it would be foolish to launch an IT protect without a trustee. As an added advantage, having a single party as a contact clarifies the responsibilities. The customer doesn't have to tell the same story 100 times and can concentrate on the important questions. At the same time, the subcontractors can carry their task with a clear mandate and communicate in the technical languagethat suits them best. Not a lot of customers are interested in techie-talk. At times, it is nevertheless important to conduct meetings with the customers and some specialists.
In the same vein, we can say that basic elements will not be built as such even if they are complex. Nobody would create a microwave from scratch when one can be bought for less than €500. This is just not cost effective.
With this approach in mind, the skill of the architect is to have a good knowledge of the products on the market and players able to install them properly.
Combined with its ability to map their features to the user needs and the other way around will allow for short delivery times and cost effectiveness.
